The Alc 46 is a large sailboat designed by the maritime architect Alfred Edward Luders together with Adolf LeComte in the early seventies. The Alc 46 is built by the Dutch yard LeComte-Holland, N.V..
The hull is made of fibreglass. A hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.
The boat is equipped with 537 liters (141 US gallons, 118 imperial gallons) fresh water capacity.
The Alc 46 is built with a masthead rig. The sail area for the mailsail + jib is 78.3 m2 (842.8 ft2). The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area – compared with a fractional rig – can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.
The Alc 46 is built with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel. The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed. The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 2.06 – 2.16 meter (6.76 – 7.06 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
The fuel tank has a capacity of 238 liters (62 US gallons, 52 imperial gallons). Alc 46 may be equipped with an inboard Westerbeke 4-107 diesel engine at 37 hp (27 kW). Calculated max speed is about 5.2 knots.
The capsize screening value for Alc 46 is 1.67, indicating that this boat could – if evaluated by this formula alone – be accepted to participate in ocean races. The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.7 knots. The term “Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed” is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.
The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Alc 46 is about 253 kg/cm, alternatively 1417 lbs/inch.
Meaning: if you load 253 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1417 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.
The Motion Comfort Ratio for Alc 46 is 36.9. Comparing this ratio with similar sailboats show that it is more comfortable than 66% of all similar sailboat designs. This comfort value is just above average. The l/b ratio for Alc 46 is 3.75. Compared with other similar sailboats it is slimmer than 82% of all other designs. It seems that the designer has chosen a significantly more speedy hull design.
The ballast ratio for Alc 46 is 40%. This ballast ratio shows a righting moment that is higher than 73% of all similar sailboat designs. A righting moment (ability to resist heeling) just above average.
The DL-ratio for Alc 46 is 304 which categorizes this boat among ‘medium weight cruisers’. 21% of all similar sailboat designs are categorized as heavier. A heavy displacement combined with smaller water plane area has lower acceleration and is more comfortable.
The SA/D for Alc 46 with ISO 8666 reference sail is 15.8, with a 135% genua the SA/D is 19.0. The SA/D ratio indicates that it is faster than 14% of all similar sailboat designs in light wind. The Alc 46 has more rig than 34% of all similar sailboats, which indicates that the boat is slightly underrigged.
When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it’s nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 44m2 (473 ft2).
